1991年にEP「All Souled Out」をリリースし、そのソウルフルな音作りで高い評価を得ていたPete Rock & C.L. Smooth。
デビュー・アルバムとなった本作は、前年のEPで見られたラフな部分が改善されて、より洗練されたヒップホップ・アルバムとなっていた。
「All Souled Out」で見られた直情的なスクラッチ（個人的には好みではある）は影を潜め、元ネタのループをそのまま使用していた楽曲の多かったサウンド・プロダクションは、本作で緻密に研ぎ澄まされた感がある。
They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)
1990年に亡くなった、Heavy D & The BoysのダンサーであったTrouble T Royの名前をタイトルに使用した"They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)"は、Tom Scott「Today」の印象的なホーン部分をサンプリング、今でも人気の高いHiphop Classicだ。
"Lots of Lovin'"での巧みなサンプリング・センス
知名度においては本アルバム中「T.R.O.Y.」が群を抜いているが、"Lots of Lovin'"ではOhio Players「What's Going On」終盤の音がフェードアウトして消えかかっている部分をサンプリング。
Pete Rockの卓越したセンスが光るとともに、元曲のループ一本勝負のサウンド作りが殆どであった前作から、わずか一年でNext Levelへと到達したことを示していた。
その他にもErnie Hines「Our Generation」をサンプリングした「Straighten It Out」など、ソウルフルな楽曲の品質は高く、
やや似通った楽曲が多い面もあるが、92年を代表する傑作アルバムであることは誰もが認めるところだろう。

まとめ
本作でのプロデュース・ワークが高い評価を得て（商業的成功という意味では当時の西海岸ギャングスタ・ラップに遠く及ばなかったが）、90年代ヒップホップシーンにおいてDJ Premierと共にニューヨークの最重要プロデューサーと称されるPete Rockのサウンドは、2年後にリリースされるセカンド・アルバム「The Main Ingredient」にてさらに精度を高め、一つの到達点を示すこととなった。
